My Students

My students learn at their own pace. They drive their instruction based on where they are, not where the teacher is teaching. My school is located next to a cow pasture, but we don't just stand around mooing. We are taking charge of our learning and growing by leaps and bounds. Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.”

My Project

Writing is probably the hardest thing to teach students. They have to learn so much in order to be successful. Often, building confidence is the first step. Once a student feels secure in what they’re writing, they will be more likely to expand and be vulnerable.

Once a child feels confident, a teacher can begin to build on ideas, organization, word choice, voice, sentence fluency, and conventions.

The next step would be to extend writing into all subject areas (including math!) by having students summarize, compare and contrast ideas, or answer journal concepts. A consistent writing plan helps ensure a smooth process.

The Teachers Pay Teachers gift card will purchase a supplement to bring our writing curriculum alive for students. It will help my students to learn the program, to be engaged, and to have supplemental resources no matter their level. It will also save so much prep time that can dedicated to student mastery.
