This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I recently moved to W. to start as a Writing and Composition teacher. I spend most of my waking hours with vibrant and brilliant ninth graders who are budding into young adulthood. Our close-knit K-12 school community promotes pride in cultural identity, encourages vulnerability from students, and expects excellence from all community members.

We know that the odds are against us and this makes us work even harder.

My experience as a first-generation Latino college graduate from a poor community helps me understand the external challenges that my students face on a daily basis. We speak honestly about these barriers and make action plans to overcome them. As my students say, “we hustle to prove the haters wrong.” Of course, this is no small task. A big part of my job as their teacher is to understand their individual learning needs. It is my responsibility to enable them to achieve purpose in the face of uncertainty. This means having one-on-conversations with them, meeting with parents, knowing what bothers them and what makes them feel supported. We celebrate little wins together every day.

My Project

In my class, we build community by writing about shared experiences and helping one another improve both our literacy and life skills. My goal is to create an environment that is safe, intellectually challenging, and responsive to their unique needs. My students practice leadership and college readiness skills in a variety of ways. They practice leadership by taking turns at monitoring classroom management, self-correcting when they get off task, and using their writing to take a stance on topics that impact our community. They practice college-readiness skills by learning to give gentle feedback to peers, learning to disagree respectfully, and connecting each and every lesson to their next steps along their academic journey.

My students and I have worked together to create a list of classroom supplies that would help us stay organized, encouraged, and on task.

This list includes items that give positive reinforcement, comfortable seating options, fidgets and stress balls for challenging moments, and basic supplies for writing and group activities. This list is informed by my own observations about what has and hasn’t worked for each of my students.
