Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I teach first and second graders on the south side of Chicago. Anyone who has ever been around kids this age (or remembers being this age) knows how energetic they are. I want to tap into that energy while getting them to write more and more. One of my goals this year is for students to experience firsthand that writing is done for many different purposes in many different spaces. I want each child to have a clipboard and an ample supply of post-it notes to help them get away from their desks and become more active learners. My students will use these supplies for a variety of activities. When reading a story at the carpet everyone will be able to quickly respond to a comprehension question posed instead of the same three children trying to answer everything. Individual students can write down questions they have about a story that they are reading while in the book corner. They can conduct science experiments and record the results right away. We can do measurement activities out on the playground and everyone can be involved in solving the problems. The possibilities are endless! I am also looking for chart paper sized post-it notes. This will help us organize the individual work and make learning discoveries as a class.
