Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students and families speak Spanish, Mam, Tongan, Arabic, Tagalog, Karen, Karenni, Nepali and Chinese. Since 45% of our students are English Language Learners, we have a rich academic program to meet their language needs. Our newcomer program serves up to forty students in our community who have moved here in the last year and speak little English. We also have a rich African American student population that thrives at our school.
Our students reflect the neighborhood's diverse immigrant and minority populations.
Throughout the year, we have cultural celebrations to celebrate the histories, cultures, and accomplishments of our diverse student population. While 96% of our students are socioeconomically disadvantaged, we are rich in so many ways.
My Project
One of my favorite units to teach in seventh grade is our children's book writing unit! Students begin their research by reading a variety of short children's books of all ages, while discussing plot and characters. Then they write a draft, draw illustrations and peer edit each other's work! The final step is 'publishing' where they laminate the cover of their book and sew it together (the laminator came from another's Donor's Choose project, but we do need some more sheets!).
While researching, I want students to be able to connect to their cultures, as well as others.
That's why I'm adding these multicultural books to our classroom library!
