Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have 24 very enthusiastic kindergarteners. Our school is located in a low socioeconomic area surrounded by factories in the industrial sector of downtown Los Angeles. We are classified as a Title I school, and 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. My students are all English Language Learners, some of whom are also struggling with learning disabilities. The majority of the parents of my students work long hours in the surrounding factories. Though they can provide some of the basics such as food and shelter (though some families live in groups together). As our economy changes, so does the level of need many of my student's families. Many must work 2 or 3 jobs to just stay above water.
My students have many obstacles in their path, such as poverty, social, community challenges (gangs), language, in addition to a few with learning disabilities all of which impede or hinder my student's opportunity for success in the future.
Due to the limited resources available in our school, they are unable to supply some necessary tools needed in the everyday classroom.
My Project
These journals will immensely help my students all year long to complete assignments and projects as we explore Financial Literacy. My students are Kindergarteners and they're writing skills are barely beginning to develop.
Having these primary journals my Kidlettes will be able to illustrate their ideas and begin to express themselves in writing on the bottom.
My beginning students will feel confident that they have the illustration box on which to draw what's on their minds and my more advance students can try to write a sentence or two. In teaching Financial Literacy to my Kindergarteners I believe that we can utilize these journals all year long. For example, in teaching them about wants and needs, the students can draw pictures of things they want on one side and try to write a sentence to accompany it. On the other side once we've discussed the differences between the two they can then illustrate things that are considered needs in ones life. For example, food, shelter, and more and be able to explain why they're necessary.
