Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students at W.A. are open-minded young people who deserve every chance at success! They come to school every day willing to soak up all the learning they can; unfortunately, many of them have learning deficits that restrict them from accessing all the higher level skills required for their grade level. It is common to have students in the class that are reading 2+ years below their grade level. Research has shown that reading and writing skills are interdependent.
I want my students to achieve their maximum potential!
Students at W.A. are reluctant to take risks in their writing and tend to write at a basic level. One reason for this is that 80% of our population has limited English proficiency. We currently provide parent literacy classes to help with English language usage, which will have an impact on how they help their children. However, they also lack the ability to communicate in written form.
My Project
Writing is a challenge for students at W.A. They have little enthusiasm for the writing process and struggle to complete the writing process. They only have access to typical materials and supplies. By providing a variety of colorful paper, assorted pens, and fully supplied writing stations, students will be motivated to work at these "Islands of Writing" and be more enthusiastic about completing their writing.
By creating "Writing Islands," my students will begin to see themselves as authors and illustrators.
The goal is to improve students motivation to write and improve written communication. In order to motivate and inspire students, "Writing Islands" will provide students with much-needed materials that will be accessible to them as they move to publishing their work. We will use these materials to aide in the process of becoming life-long writers. Our district supports the Writer's Workshop in the elementary grades. Students in my classes will truly benefit from your donation!
