My students, coming from a school district that was shut down by the state for the unjust education, have faced many obstacles the average 50-year-old has never faced. They come to school to learn, despite the lack of stability at home. They come from immigrant homes, are one hundred percent high-risk, and their parents often work two jobs just to make sure that the children have the basic needs for school. My students have a desire to learn and grow. They are eager mathematicians and soaring scientists. They want to be good role models for their younger siblings. They work hard each day, and they come to school with a positive attitude. I want to make sure that my students have the same opportunities to learn from their peers who are not facing the same obstacles.
My students suffered a terrible natural disaster last year, Hurricane Harvey, which was the most destructive hurricane Houston has experienced.
Many families lost their personal belongings, and some had to be evacuated from their houses by force. Our school is in a very flooded area, and they are suffering and wondering how they will ever recover from this tragedy.
The poverty cycle affects my students in many ways. Poverty can be passed from generation to generation because of many factors. My students are in need of a writing center revamp. With these new materials my students would become more focused on how to write good sentences, paragraphs and finally stories. Writing centers help promote positive attitudes towards writing because children have the choice to choose to write in a variety of forms. When children are given choices and access to a variety of materials they will become good writers. The writing center will provide a place to grow their writing skills and the value of the written word. The center will have a variety of materials such as paper, pencils, markers, dry erase boards and markers, Can Do! Reading Games, Reading & Writing Skills Folder Game, Grammar & Writing Folder Game, and Developing Writing Skills Magnetic Teaching Charts.
Last school year was extremely hard for several of my students due to the impact of Hurricane Harvey, had been a year but they still suffer the impact of this natural disaster; however, they still work very hard every day to obtain academic achievements.
My students are motivated when they know a "real person" has invested in their educations! Your contribution to this project will help my students develop life skills that will make them better parents, homeowners, tenants, employees, and citizens.
