I teach Academic Intervention Services to students in grades K-5. Our rural elementary school in upstate New York has a student population of 340 students. Students who are at risk of failing the New York State Assessments and students who are having difficulty academically are recommended to receive Academic Intervention Services.
My students come from diverse economic backgrounds, with a significant number of students who receive free or reduced-priced lunch.
Our school, similar to other schools across the country, has homeless students who are hungry for food and hungry for learning. Sometimes, homelessness just happens...a parent loses their job, a family member becomes ill and can't work. We have students throughout the year who find themselves and their families in this situation. Suddenly, they become homeless.
All of our students are eager to learn and love coming to school. Our students are independent, hard-working, and compassionate. Our school is much more than a building where learning takes place. For many of our students, our school is where they feel safe, where they obtain nourishment, and where they are loved.
My Project
This markerboard reading table will allow my students to use dry-erase markers to practice basic reading skills, such as phonics and sight words. Students will have fun while learning these important reading skills. The table is large enough to seat up to 5 students at one time. Students can be at the table to read books or to participate in skill-based center activities. This table will provide my students with the skill and reading practice that will allow them to become independent and successful readers and writers. The dry-erase feature will be an extra fun bonus for all of my students!
