This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
While my students are no longer newcomers to this country, they struggle to improve their English reading and writing skills. To hear them speak, they might sound like regular American kids, but when you read their writing or listen to them reading out loud you can see that they need a great deal of practice reading and writing in English.
During this time of online learning, my students have had many challenges, and getting tools for learning should not be one of them.
Getting technology and internet access has drained all their resources and resolve since they have had to negotiate surveys and phone calls in a language that is still new to them and their parents.
They are trying to complete work while watching younger siblings. They have to share devices with older siblings. In addition, many of my students have trouble getting enough food to eat or other basic care items. I want to make sure they have something to help them escape the challenges they are facing every day which will also help them grow their skills at the same time.
My Project
We're two weeks into the new school year and I am incredibly proud of my students! They have so much patience and they are determined to learn, no matter what! Since our district provided them with iPads, I have been trying to use all the tools available to them - including the touch screen for writing. It is much easier for them to get a picture or document from me and use their finger to write their answers. Their perseverance is inspiring and they never give up on making it work.
Unfortunately, fingers aren't the best tools for writing and I often have trouble reading what they've written.
I need my students to have these styluses so that I can read their written work and give them appropriate feedback to improve their writing. Help them to help me!
