Help me give my students seating options for a Writing Cafe where optimal learning, application, and innovation can occur.
I am proud to teach in a small community of hard working, innovative, and creative students. We are a Title I school whose majority, despite long hours and hard work, are low income families. Last year I started teaching 4th grade, moved with them to 5th, and I am voluntarily moving with them to 6th as their cross curriculum writing teacher. This demonstrates what a fantastic group we have and my dedication to provide the best opportunity for growth possible. We will include a holistic writing curriculum including social studies and STEM. I have noticed the highest potential for win-win attitudes, building leadership traits, and intrinsic motivation is in the right environment where they can move around while engaging. Before I was a classroom teacher for this group, I had many of the same students on my academic team who inspired me to choose the position. I believe setting the best example I can, having consistency with expectations has developed a great team who is resilient in their failures and push through to better themselves. My desire is to give them the best setting to move and learn outside traditional desks in the Writing Cafe.
Have you ever thought of your favorite places to read and write?
Are you most creative and able to think when you are relaxed, able to move, or at a desk which you have been assigned to sit for long periods of time?
Many companies are finding through research that people are more productive when they are given an environment in which they are comfortable. In reading and writing, I have tried to incorporate a variety of classroom settings including the traditional desks, the outdoors, using bean bags and beach chairs, and making a variety of crate benches in hope to encourage students to continue these practices anywhere they go in life. I am teaching 6th grade writing this 2019-2020 school year and would like to incorporate more flexible seating with tables and chairs vs. desks, design my classroom to support student creativity and critical thinking.
My desire from this project is to acquire a variety of optional seating for students to choose from in order to provide a more productive learning environment.
