Celebrating Black History Month

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My 4th grade students are very resilient students. My school is located in a low income community. Many of my students come from homes struggling to make ends meet. With that, my students bring a lot of their experiences into the classroom. They are powerful, brave, and important. They love learning about issues that affect them and they are very solution driven.

My Project

Many of my students shut down when it comes to the idea of writing because it is a complex task. In order to nurture a love for writing, I am having my students keep therapy journals this year. These journals will be a place where my students can lay their burdens using a pen and paper without judgement. Having journals with positive affirmations on the cover and exciting gel pens will engage my students in the idea of using a journal and pen as therapy and a place to celebrate the beauty and hardships of their personal lives.
