Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am extremely lucky and grateful to work with 97 incredibly sweet English Learners, 18 of which are newcomers. I have been fortunate enough to witness how respectful, kind-hearted, and affectionate they all are. My students come from low income households and are all grateful for the opportunities and support given to them.
When I first started, many of my newcomers would not speak a word of English aloud because they were too afraid of being made fun of.
It has been so gratifying as an educator to watch them grow, take risks and confidently participate in their classes. One of my current goals is to provide my students with the materials necessary to organize their classwork, improve their writing skills through self-care and engage students with fun classroom games.
My Project
I've often times questioned why my students just shoved their classwork into their backpacks. Many times I have seen them struggle to find a single homework or classroom assignment as they look through their stack of papers one by one. Why don't they organize their work in a binder? The lack of organization is because a lot of my students depend on our school to obtain basic school supplies.
My students need to be provided with the necessary materials to learn essential organizational skills which will be useful to them now and in the future.
My students will be able to stay organized with the three ring binders and dividers, as well as practice their English writing skills with composition notebooks and lap boards! The first set of composition notebooks will be used for students to jot down notes and complete exercises. The second set will serve as a journal in which students practice self-care and simultaneously put their newly learned skills to practice! Lastly, the lapboards will be utilized to engage students in friendly competition while practicing their spelling and grammar.
I can already see the gratitude and the sparkle in their eyes when they realize that most of these items are for them to keep! I am enthusiastically looking forward to providing my students with these resources.
