I am fortunate to be part of a school that strives for excellence. We meet students' needs in rigorous teaching strategies and expect only the best from our students.
My school is proud to be a "Leader in Me" school that works on taking author Steven Covey's 7 Habits, making them age-appropriate and working them into our school campus, so that students begin to see their campus as a way to show leadership.
The "Leader in Me" is not a curriculum, but rather a way of doing life on the school campus through awareness of how we learn and grow, and how we speak and treat one another.
Students learning the habit of solving conflicts, then becoming conflict managers is just one way the Leader in Me program in action on our campus looks like. Students take the 7 Habits that are taught to them and begin to think of ways they can take ownership of their campus through leadership. Whether it's a 5th grader helping a 1st grader to read, students setting goals and overcoming academic obstacles, or students seeing a need to clean their campus, all are ways that the 7 Habits teach students to lead.
My Project
In a couple of weeks, my students will begin their practice with informative writing. These Just Write! skills books help students learn the process of informative writing. They are great books for students to learn paragraph structure as well staying on topic of the main idea. Students will use the books to answer writing prompts, research, and cite text evidence from articles. They will use them to tell stories from non-fiction articles.
Also, the requested map skills books will help students learn and practice local and global map skills - from using a legend on a map to knowing longitude vs latitude.
We will study maps and answer questions on geography. These skill books will allow my students to use both reading and geography skills.
