This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Students often keep their notes unorganized and lose their materials. This makes it difficult for them to have notes to reference to assist them with retention of skills learned. The math journal will give them one place to keep their thinking and learning to reference later.
My students are fifth and sixth grade students who receive mathematics in a small group, intensive setting.
Their school is a Chicago Public School on the south side of Chicago. They attend a school where resources are limited, but the desire to learn is boundless. My students are curious and enjoy mathematics class.
My Project
My fifth and sixth grade students will use the math journals on a daily basis to keep their math work and thinking in an organized space. Students use their math journals for the Problem of the Day, taking notes and for practicing concepts learned in class. Students are also allowed to use their notes on class assignments and assessments.
Donations to this project will provide students with a journal to organize their thinking.
Students in my class struggle with retention of skills and concepts they are learning. This journal will make learning and retention of skills more accessible. Also math journals will give them an opportunity to have an organized space to use keep all of their work.
