Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am currently teaching at a Title I school in a low socioeconomic neighborhood where 100% of students receive free breakfast and lunch. This school year, I have twenty-five second/third grade English language learners students. Most of my students come from Central America and Mexico. For most of my students, English is their third language. My students vary in ability, background and learning styles. It is this diversity that makes my class a special place to be.

My students walk into the classroom with enthusiasm to learn and regardless of the obstacles they may face at home, come to school eager to learn something new every day.

They know that through hard work and perseverance they can rise to any challenge.

My Project

I have been teaching my students how to become better writers by using Lucy Calkins' Writer’s Workshop and the growth they have demonstrated as writers is remarkable. They have improved greatly from writing a few sentences to creating their own multi-paragraph stories. We are studying different genres of writing and they look forward to learning a new genre.

Informational text resources and having a complete set of the units of study are imperative to teaching Writer’s Workshop efficiently and effectively to gain student mastery.

As a teacher I feel it necessary to provide them with as many resources as I possibly can. The set of units of study that my colleagues and I inherited, unfortunately are missing several of the genres, mentor text and informational text. We need a complete set to teach Writer's Workshop. This set of units of study and informational texts will give each student the resources to learn opinion, information, and narrative writing with increasing complexity. It will provide the resources to develop and refine strategies for content-area writing.

Writers workshop fosters students’ progress and differentiates instruction through texts and strategies that model writing. This set of units of study and mentor texts will give each student resources to read, learn, and write!

These resources will be shared with all grade levels. Thank you for supporting our writers!
