Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Energetic! Enthusiastic! Eager! That is how I describe all the students at my school, but especially my sixth graders. They love to learn and are desperate for knowledge and engagement. Our mission is to prepare every student for excellent through rigorous academics. Our students are ready for the challenge. They are determined to be successful, and ready to learn, regardless of our lack of resources and funds. Every day they come in smiling and ready to encounter new challenges with passion and ardor.
My Project
Creative writing has been slowly upstaged by essays and arguments because of the standardized testing. Unfortunately the focus of our schools is not how to create lovers of learning, but great test takers.
Earlier in my career, before high stakes testing, I had ample time to teach and explore creative writing in my classroom.
After all, where do ideas and inspiration come from? They come from journaling. All great writers will tell you that they had journals to jot down and write ideas, pictures, thoughts etc... My students were always excited to write in their journals. It was their space, their time.
I am requesting journaling supplies for the students. I would love for them to each have their own journal. Furthermore I wanted to ask for ways to be inspired to write, that are more engaging. For example they can use the camera to take a picture of something they want to capture and write about later, or maybe hear a song that inspires a poem. That is why I am also asking for the camera and earbuds.
I would like to bring that back into the classroom. I would love to begin or end each day with journaling and quiet reflection . From these journals we can dig and find the beginnings of a story, a poem, an autobiography maybe even the next great American Novel.
