I teach in a NYC public school district in the borough of Queens. Our borough has been recognized as one of the most diverse in the nation and our school community speaks many languages.
Our children come from many countries, speak many different languages, and bring with them a wealth of cultures that enrich us all.
The families, students and educators have success as a goal, and the students are hard working, motivated, and love to learn.
My Project
My students need funding for basic puppetry and fabric markers in order to create their puppets. Puppets have been used for thousands of years to help communicate the times and needs of human society. What better way to celebrate this ancient art form than to have students create their own puppets and perform their very own scripts?
I am having the students upcycle already acquired old materials along with puppet-making supplies to create their very own puppets. During our English Language Arts writing units students will write their own plays and demonstrate using the newly created cast of puppets they’ve made with materials we’ve collected and purchased.
The creation of puppets will bring a tactile and enriching experience into our writing units.
Students will have the opportunity to work with partners to write a script for a play, create the cast of characters in the form of puppets, and conduct a demonstration. This would include a celebration for the parents of our students.
