Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is located in Camden, NJ. The school has a large Hispanic population and contains a large English Learner population. The majority of the students qualify for free breakfast, lunch, and after school programs.
My class is energetic, creative, respectful, and full of energy.
They make every day an adventure and I cant imagine being in any other profession. This year, in grades k-3 we have a heavy focus on developing our students writing skills.
Our English Language Learners love to draw and are learning to read and write in English. Our goal is that they become bi-literate. While many of them experience stress as a result of extreme poverty they are so full of love for learning and their teachers. It is a blessing to be able to serve them and help them grow.
My Project
Currently I work in a high poverty area and students and their families do not have money to purchase needed supplies. Our English Language Learners vary in English Proficiency levels. Our new ELL's are able to demonstrate their understanding with mostly illustrations and labeling, while other English Language Learners are able to write simple sentences to creative stories.
As a teacher I love to see my students unique illustrations and hear how they describe them.
They are excited about developing their writing in their second language. The Classic Primary Composition Notebooks will provide them the opportunity to create wonderful art and develop their writing skills in English.
