Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Kids hate writer's block. When they can't think of ideas for a story, they start to dread writing. I want my kids to love writing, so let's give them some writer's blocks that make writing fun.
My fourth graders live in a working class and immigrant neighborhood.
Most of them are learning English as a second language, some have special needs, and all of them love to learn. Our Title I school is an important safe haven for my kids, who are surrounded by poverty and gang activity.
My Project
My kids will enjoy writing if they have a writing center that is fun and inviting. The writing cubes we are requesting have different prompts on them, like "If I could fly, I would..." or "If I were a king, I would..." On the retell story cubes, students are asked to tell about a character's feelings, or retell the story using a different setting. My students will be able to work independently, writing fun stories based on a roll of the cubes. These writer's "blocks" will bring a level of surprise and spontaneity to the writing process. We are asking for several kinds of story cubes and prompts, plus basic writing materials like notebooks, pencils and a pencil sharpener.
Thanks to your generous donation, my students will love getting writer's block!
With each visit to their writing center, they will roll the dice and start having fun. My students and I thank you!
