My Detroit area English classes are full of genuine, undeniable talent. We are the most racially diverse school in our area and have a strong LGBT population. Our students often are fleeing years of bullying and abuse by peers.
My students can finally be who they really are.
Our school is a sanctuary for musicians, singers, dancers, artists, writers, and creative thinkers. Our greatest asset is genuine acceptance--enthusiasm for difference. Teachers here sacrifice pay and work a longer day so that this creative, innovative school can exist. Half of our teachers are art teachers and so resources and money are very tight.
My Project
I am requesting two laptops and MS Word for the Mac in my room (the Mac was donated to us through this site and used for creative projects including my filmmaking club -- it didn't come with Word), along with some other resources to help my English students. My English classroom (with class sizes of over 30) has only ONE old PC in it--the one I use for daily attendance and grading. It isn't news that most writing in college and in professional setting involves a computer.
For an innovative fine and performing arts charter school to compete with public schools, we need technology.
If we are going to prove that the old model of education needs rethinking, we need to even the playing field. To inspire my remarkable English students, I need the tools of today. We are such a great school but we can't compete with the big schools with extra funds from tax dollars. These kids deserve more.
