Our school is Title I and has a significant number of students from low-income households. I know every teacher probably feels this way, but I think I have the best kids in the world. They are sweet, kind, and oh-so-curious. They make it easy to get up and go to work in the morning!
My students are wiggle masters... no matter the time of day, they like to be moving in one way or another.
The only time of day they're willing to sit in one spot for more than 10 seconds at a time is during read aloud, where they absolutely love listening to stories.
My students are particularly interested in video games and technology, and they're often as proficient (or even more so!) than I am. They also have a passion for science, especially learning about animals.
My Project
Poetry is a mirror into the soul, and a big part of our second-grade curriculum! Unfortunately, children's poetry books tend to be a bit more difficult to find because they're not traditionally a huge part of the classroom library. I don't want our lack of materials to negatively impact my students.
This request is for several incredible poetry books and anthologies specially prepared for elementary-aged readers/writers and intended to be used as mentor texts for students' own writing!
A mentor text gives students the tools to begin expressing their creativity without the fear of "writer's block." I've also requested notebooks for students to prepare their poetry in.
