My Project

Every morning, my fifth graders walk into our classroom carrying more than just their backpacks—they carry challenges no child should have to face. At a 100% poverty school, many of my students arrive without even the most basic supplies. I watch them search their desks for a pencil that isn’t there or try to participate with a dried-out marker that no longer works. No child should ever feel embarrassed or left out simply because they don’t have a pencil. With your help, I can place these simple but essential tools into their hands, giving them dignity, confidence.

My students also deserve to see themselves in the stories they read.

Too often, the books available to them don’t reflect their lives, their cultures, or their possibilities. When children never see themselves as the hero of a story, it can make them feel like their own story doesn’t matter. By bringing African American literature into our classroom, I can give my students mirrors that reflect who they are and windows that show them who they can become. These books will do more than teach reading—they will build identity, pride, and a sense of belonging that every child deserves.

Science is where my students’ eyes light up the most—but it’s also where I feel the gap the deepest. They are curious, full of questions, and eager to explore, yet without materials, their learning is limited to words on a page instead of discoveries in their hands. Imagine wanting to experiment, to build, to explore—and not having the tools to do it. With science materials, my students won’t just learn about the world—they will experience it.
