This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are joyful, rambunctious, high energy and full of life. They all have big dreams - to be lawyers, basketball players, college graduates, astronomers, and more.
I teach a self-contained, special education class in Baltimore, at a Title I school where one hundred percent of students receive free lunch.
They are all unique in their personalities and learning styles and demonstrate their knowledge in different ways. In my classroom, they learn critical academic, behavioral, and life skills. I want to give them all the tools they need to be successful and accomplish their goals.
My Project
In my classroom, we use dry erase boards, magnetic boards, and write and wipe sheet protectors daily. Students use these materials during their independent work and centers, and I use them in my teaching to give students a way to record their work and thoughts without wasting copious amounts of paper. With magnetic boards, student build and sound out works with magnetic letters. The sheet protectors and sleeves allow me to reuse worksheets that my students use to practice writing common sight words. The markers and erasers ensure that students can record their answers to questions during lessons and show them to me- a critical way for my students with speech issues to demonstrate their learning.
Dry erase markers, boards, and sheets are an integral part of teaching, but they get run through quickly due to high use.
I need to restock all my dry erase materials- boards, markers, erasers, cleaners, and sheet protectors, so that I can continue to give my students access to these resources. Many aspects of student learning in my class are dependent on these materials, so it is critical that students are able to freely use them.
