This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from very diverse backgrounds, but all come from a low-income community in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Many are from single-parent homes, and unfortunately some of them are in between housing arrangements/living in transitional housing. RE serves grades K-5, and all students qualify for free meals. We have a high percentage of students who come from bilingual homes, or who have very recently arrived in the U.S. As a community school, we serve all families through various evening programs and educational opportunities.

My Project

My students have so many creative ideas and stories to tell. But unfortunately, because our curriculum does not give enough attention to grammar and writing skills, our wonderful stories are often lost among punctuation mistakes, spelling errors, and poor sentence structure. Some students even feel too discouraged and overwhelmed to start writing, because they are afraid of making mistakes.

These "Correct the Sentence" activity books will give us practice EVERY MORNING with concepts they are struggling with: commas, capitalization, quotation marks, etc.

After students enter my room and unpack their book bags, they will complete each day's activity to receive crucial practice we are missing within our current curriculum!
