My students need Chromebooks to create digital reading and writing portfolios.

In my class scholars learn that success is possible despite the struggles they may face, before and after school. I teach in a low-income and high crime school district. Additionally, many of my students are English Language Learners who have had limited education in their native countries. Yet, despite the many challenges, I am determined to provide my scholars with academic and extra-curricular experiences that are comparable to that in more affluent districts. My students are taught how to be responsible school students and community citizens. They are encouraged to read often, study hard, and to learn about other cultures and communities, in hopes of one day traveling the world. We dream big!
Despite the hardships my students may face, I teach them to practice random acts of kindness and paying it forward.
While I am unable to control what my students experience when they leave school, I am able to influence how they react to negative situations and how they view the world. I give them possibilities! The classroom is colorful and inviting with yard sale comfy furniture and carpet. I don't mind doing for my students because they are ... well, part of me.
My project involves using technology to close the Achievement Gap between rich and poor students by bringing one-on-one technology into the classroom. A set of classroom laptops would allow me to provide my students with individualized learning and online teaching aids, that are comparable to that of affluent communities.
With limited school funds, my digital literacy goals can not be realized because my students do not have access to the necessary technology tools (laptops, iPads, Internet, etc) on a daily basis.
A study from Michigan State University psychologist Linda Jackson, PhD (2006 Developmental Psychology (Vol. 42, No. 3, pages 429-435)), found that those children that used the Internet more had higher scores on standardized reading tests after six months, and their grade point averages were also higher than those children who used it less. I am new to my school building and plan to show students, parents, and fellow teachers the academic rewards of digital learning.
