Help me give my students composition notebooks and resources that will provide meaningful, engaging writing instruction that can foster a lifetime love of learning!
My Title I students are learning to unlock their inner writing voice! Using mentor texts and other high-yield engagement strategies, they are discovering their ability to express themselves on paper beyond the confines of the traditional five-paragraph essay. These notebooks will give them a place to store their quick writes, responses, journal entries, and reflections so they can refer back to them later and select pieces to expand.
Inspired by Kelly Gallagher, Penny Kittle, Linda Rief, and others of the same philosophy, students will write daily in response to prompts in the form of micro-mentor texts and excerpts in order to identify their own unique writing styles, develop stamina, practice the skills of revision and editing, and build their confidence as highly skilled readers and writers, ready to enter the world beyond high school as competent, literate young adults.
Resources such as 4 Essential Studies: Beliefs and Practices to Reclaim Student Agency and the book A Teacher's Guide to Mentor Texts, 6-12: The Classroom Essentials Series will help them personalize their writing notebooks and ensure that they have the tools they need to be successful readers and writers every day. They'll also be great resources for creating engaging, effective, meaningful instruction in reading and writing for my students.
