Do you remember the first time you held a pencil? Lines, shapes, squiggles flowed freely and then you held it up to your teacher and she "read" it. Wow! What a feeling to be able to communicate with others!
We live in a world where information is being exchanged at a record pace.
The art of writing is a critical skill that must be learned and polished to be successful in today's society. My students must be able to communicate efficiently and effectively while developing their own style. The students in my grade one class have a wide variety of writing skills. Some are still at the drawing stage, other are progressing to conventional spelling. But, one thing is the same for everyone..they all love, and are proud, to share their stories.
My Project
Every day is a new adventure with the promise of a new tale to tell. Every student wants to be able to capture their memories in a meaningful way, but most lack the skills and knowledge to do so. Being only in first grade, my students are now beginning to see the importance of their writing and how they can use their words to communicate with others.
The resources and materials I am requesting will take each of my students from their current level and provide opportunities and learning experiences to reinforce and apply what they are learning on a daily basis. The students will be engaged in writing activities that involve sequencing, sentence building, grammar and usage and expanding details. They will develop the skills and confidence they need to be successful authors, storytellers, and reporters.
Every child has a story they want to tell.
Developing their confidence and passion for writing is something that must be developed at an early age. This project is designed to do just that. To be able to express thoughts, feelings and emotions and to communicate with others is a life-long skill that every child should be empowered with.
