My students need writing supplies like dry erase boards with markers and colored pencils! We are almost out of pencils, so how can my students work if they don't have pencils to use???
To me, the greatest pleasure of writing is not what it's about, but the inner music the words make. ~Truman Capote. I want my students to be able to let their inner music out. In order to do so, they need writing implements such as pencils, colored pencils and white boards with markers.
Diverse-this is the word that best describes my school.
We have immigrants from all over the world, over 30 different nations; many of whom have little or nothing when they arrive at our doors. Our families have a very high rate of poverty, over 75%. We also have some of the highest taxed real estate in the city in our neighborhood, and yes, the children who live in those houses also attend our school. Our school motto is "From across the street and around the world", which truly describes us. The culture of our school is tightly woven in cultural and ethnic diversity and it is a beautiful place to be! The children have a desire to learn, no matter, or perhaps because of, the circumstances from which they come.
My children will be able to write and express themselves with the materials I have requested. Many of my students speak very little English, but they can draw pictures to get their ideas and feelings across. If they had new colored pencils and white boards with markers they could let all of us know what is going on inside. My students also love to write, many groan in frustration when the writing period ends. They would write all day if I would let them. Such prolific writers go through a lot of pencils, I feel like it is a full time job just keeping the pencil cup stocked. We have gone through literally hundreds of pencils this year and need more to get us through until June. It seems like such a simple request, but to many of the students at my school, school supplies are limited. A new pencil brings a huge smile to their faces.
Donations to this project will bring smiles to my students face, and to mine also.
I want my students to have everything they need and would love to go out and buy it all, but unfortunately that isn't a reality. Please help out and make us all smile.Read More
