My students attend an inner city middle school. Our math classroom has over 90 students in the room every day learning the standards set forth by both the National Council of Math Teachers and our state standards. There are over 20 students with special education needs that attend this classroom on a daily basis. These students are sixth and seventh grade students in the state of NY and are of a low socio-economic status. It is a school where most of the students qualify for free and reduced lunch program.
When working on math concepts in a classroom of about thirty students, it is difficult for each student’s work to be seen by the teacher, because of the space constraints. If each student in the class had a white board and marker, then the student could hold up the board toward one of the teachers in the room to display their work. This method has been used successfully in the school in other math classrooms. In order for the students to each have the opportunity to display their own work, more white boards and markers are needed.
It is an amazing change of tone in the class when the students quickly raise their work on a whiteboard to proudly display the work that they successfully have done. Since the classroom doesn’t have enough white boards, students need to share and take turns. When students do not have an individual board, they do not all feel a part of the community.
All this class needs is enough individual whiteboards and markers so that each student can have a board during class. These resources will be used over and over and thus will be a part of our community’s effort to be more frugal with our resources and not to waste paper.
Your donation will help our crowded classroom overcome the problem of the teachers seeing every student's individual work. This is a way to help our students feel confident and get the practice they need on their basic math skills in school. A small donation can have a large impact on these students' success in school.
