This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am a second grade teacher in a low-income, high poverty school district. Over 80% of students at our school receive free or reduced-price lunch; my students are presented with a multitude of challenges both in and out of the classroom on a daily basis. Despite the many challenges they face, they surprise me with their determination and brilliance every day.
My students have the potential to do amazing things; they just need some help in recognizing their ability and applying their strengths.
They think in creative and unique ways, and I want to nurture all their gifts.
Sometimes my students need extra support from me both in school and at home, which means that I send many materials home with them daily. It is important that my students have consistent access to books, writing materials, and math manipulatives, so that they can have the scaffolds they need to be successful.
My Project
My students have amazing ideas, but tend to get bored when putting them to paper. I'd like to change that with an exciting and tech-friendly writing station.
The pencil sharpener, pencils, markers, paper, and printer and ink will help my budding authors really engage in their craft.
They will use the pencils and sharpener to feel empowered to begin writing at any time. They can use the markers to illustrate or create big books using our chart stand.
They will use Chromebooks we already have to print their work to the printer and create books using author's craft websites.
