Although our school is in a rural community, we have a diverse population of students. Many of our students are fairly new to our country and are just learning to speak English. Some of our students live in poverty while others come from wealthier homes.
In the ELA classroom, our diversity becomes one of our greatest strengths.
Because students have had a variety of different life experiences, we are able to hear many different perspectives on the texts we read, and how different people can relate to them.
My Project
Sometimes being a middle school student can be pretty tough! From the physical changes they experience to the stereotypical "middle school drama," it can be a lot to process, and not all students have the tools they need to get through it all. When students don't know how to process and cope with the things going on in their personal lives, it can be quite the distraction from their academic lives.
Having access to tools that help them appropriately process through difficult situations and feelings will help my students stay more focused on their academic work.
I want my students to have access to journals and pencils that they can use to write down and reflect on the things that are bothering them. By writing things down, students will be more likely to enter the classroom with a clear mind and be ready to focus on their academic work.
I also want my students to have access to small whiteboards and stress balls that they can bring to their desks to help them stay focused. Often times when my students are frustrated they start doodling on their work. Giving them access to a whiteboard and markers will allow them to have a place where they can doodle while listening without being tempted to write in their books or on their desks. Additionally, having access to stress balls will give them a quiet option to manage stress when they are feeling overwhelmed.
When kids have access to the right tools, the limits are endless, and I really want to see my students be successful.
