Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are full of energy, excitement, are eager to learn. Being 6 and 7 years old, instruction needs to keep them engaged and as hands-on as possible. Watching them learn, and help each other in the process is thrilling for me.
"I get it" is something I hear shouted out in my classroom often.
That look of accomplishment and sometimes surprise as they finally understand something they have been struggling with is one of my favorite parts of my job.
We are a school where many of our students are learning English and almost half are from low income homes. Our families are very supportive and involved with their children's education and want to do what it takes to help their children succeed. I have an incredible group of funny, smart, and enthusiastic learners!
My Project
My students need individual dry erase boards to use throughout the day. We will use them for all subject areas, including math, writing, and phonics. Being able to try something, and easily erase it to fix mistakes, is very important for students.
White boards are an engaging tool in a classroom and allows even the more reluctant student to TRY and take chances.
There is magic in the fact that what they are doing is not permanent and it frees many students to put in effort. Plus, they are simply FUN- something important for first graders. White boards increase student engagement and leads to a deeper understanding of curriculum.
We use white boards to practice math skills in whole group, small group, and partner work. We will also use them to learn phonics skills such as building word families and playing with sounds in words. We will practice building sentences, using correct punctuation and capitalization, and adding details before we commit our thoughts to paper. These tools will be used all day long!
We are also needing a larger desk top white board for small group instruction. This will allow me to model how to solve math problems, teach phonics skills, as well as modeling skills needed to become expressive writers. Along with this, we need dry erase erasers for small group work. Another need of ours is for lined chart paper in order for me to model letter formation, as well modeling informative, narrative, and opinion writing as part of our writing instruction. All of these items are not supplied by my school and are needed tools in order for me to help my students reach their full potential.
