I teach Music to 700+ Kindergarten through 5th grade students in my school.
We are a very diverse school community, where 40+ languages are spoken.
Students come from a variety of socioeconomic, cultural, and academic backgrounds, but the thing that unites all of us is our love for learning! The music classroom is a place where students can discover their creative strengths, explore and share about various cultures, and build community.
This has been a unique year for our community. Hurricane Harvey caused many of our students and teachers to lose their apartments or homes, led to students moving into our school from different areas, etc. Music class is a place where they can escape the chaos and feel encouragement and hope.
My Project
My music room has been around for over 20 years now and aside from replacing Expo markers yearly, my dry erase materials are as old as the school! We love to show our learning using dry erase boards, but it has been difficult for the past couple of years as our dry erase boards well...don't erase without a LOT of elbow grease.
Students will use the dry erase boards to practice writing music notation, compose their own rhythms and melodies and write their own rhymes and lyrics.
The composition aspect of elementary music is a more difficult one to achieve, but it is so much easier with dry erase materials. In addition to using the lap boards, students will use the page sleeves. This not only reduces clutter, but also respects our budget and the environment by allowing us to reuse paper, by simply placing it in the sleeve, completing the activity, then erasing it away!
