I teach 20 second grade students (virtually for the 2020-2021 school year) at a magnet school located in Hartford, Connecticut. I work at a school where free breakfast and lunch are served daily. My students all have diverse backgrounds and come to school online each and every day so eager and willing to learn. Many of my students suffer from an abundant amount of social/emotional issues going on in their personal lives which at times could make the long school day very difficult for them. However, despite the daily issues that most of my students face, every day, they come into my classroom with such perseverance and try their personal best. My school and classroom is a safe and happy place for my students.
My Project
For the 2020-2021 school year, I am teaching 20 students virtually from their individual homes. Although all of my students are learning online this school year, I want to make sure they are equipped with all of the hands-on materials that they would use in a traditional school year if they were learning in person in the classroom. As part of my teaching practices this school year, I incorporate both online and hands-on activities, as I believe it is extremely important for my students to practice their fine motor skills. I try to incorporate whiteboard usage as much as I can into our phonics curriculum. My students will write sight words and/or sentences on their whiteboards as part of our daily learning activities. However, I want to engage my students in ways other than just using whiteboards by allowing them to use different writing utensils such as crayons, colored pencils, and markers. These materials will allow my students to write sentences and sight words by rainbow writing or even draw a picture to support their comprehension of a text that they read. I have a very artistic group of students this year, so this project would benefit them greatly. Unfortunately, the items listed in this project were a part of my school supply order this year, but unfortunately with COVID-19 and me teaching my students virtually this school year, my supply order got canceled. My students would appreciate these materials so much!
