Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Think about your middle school years. Did you always feel comfortable answering questions in the middle of class? I know I didn't, and many of my students definitely don't. These dry erase boards can make it easier for them to participate in class without fear of criticism.
The demographics of my students are approximately half Hispanic and half African-American.
Our school is a Title 1 school in Texas, which means that a majority of our students receive free or reduced lunch. They do not let this define them, however, as they aim to succeed in whatever arena they find themselves. They are an amazing and eager group of young adults that yearn for knowledge every single day. They aim high and many of students hope to attend elite universities such as Harvard and Yale. They are never satisfied with simply passing their exams and have high expectations for themselves. They understand that college is only possible if they put forth the effort now to properly prepare themselves. Lastly, while some do have many issues to deal with at home or in their communities, they are persistent in their beliefs that they can and will succeed.
My Project
These dry erase boards will allow each student to participate in discussions and questioning even if they feel embarrassed about their answers. These boards will also help diversify the number of activities that we can do in the classroom. Games like jeopardy are a lot easier with dry erase boards. They do not have to put themselves out there as much as if they had to vocalize their answers. Walking around the classroom, I often find some students who did not raise their hands with the right answers written on their papers. My hope is that these dry erase boards will help inspire enough confidence in them so that they will feel more comfortable to participate.
Donations to this project will greatly assist my students in learning and raising their confidence levels.
As a teacher, I have learned to hold each moment sacred with my students, as you never know which one will be the one that changes their lives. I am confident that these boards will positively affect my students through their diverse use in the classroom.
