Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from the streets of South Side (inner-city), Oklahoma City. Most teachers can only imagine what their students live in reality. My experience is first hand. I was raised in the same neighborhood as my students. My students live in a low income, high poverty, high crime gang infested neighborhood. Education is a small piece of their puzzle, but for many, it may be the only viable path out of the suction of such an environment. My students don't always grow up with emphasis on activities that are school related and strategic to their development.
My Project
Unlike our team, the equipment my wrestlers have available is outdated and overused. New gear will make my students feel proud. Matching gear would help them feel even more like a team. They will feel like they are special and that they are being rewarded. When you feel good about what you are doing and see progression, there is a chance you will stick around. When kids stick around, we tend to rub off on them. I have multiple students that only come to school for their team/family. My students work hard to remain eligible and not let their coach and teammates down. To remain eligible they must attend school regularly and be passing all of their classes. The cool thing is that at the end of the day, the shoes could be the avenue that can aid in my ultimate goal for my wrestlers. My goal is that they all GRADUATE with true hope, and character.
