This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a part of a community that has been disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. All my students are all minorities from a low income community, located in North Long Beach. Historically students in this area have struggled academically. The data is showing to have the odds against them, although as an educator I can not let history repeat itself. I would like to provide them the best engaging experience during these times. They deserve more than just screen time. I want to give my students an equitable experience compared to those students who are lucky to have these social and emotional outlets because at McKinley Elementary we believe that "All Means All".

My Project

The "Wreck this Journal" will be used in their home setting during distance learning. The journal is for the students to utilize when we have brain breaks, mindfulness, or art. This is a great tool to allow their creative juices flow and just disconnect from their screens. I want my students to have the opportunity to be kids again and gain their confidence without the pressure of executing an assignment or the frustration of technology. I want them to be proud of their work and be able to share with their family or me (their teacher) on their creations.
