Help me give my students an artificial Christmas Tree that can be used in our Wreaths Across America Ceremony to honor both current service members and veterans in their families.
My classroom is located in a large urban district. The students in my classroom come from high-poverty homes, yet they do not let that stop them from being successful. They come into school each day eager and ready to learn. They are able to leave what is happening at home at the door and put their best foot forward in order to better their future!
Sitting in front of me each day are ESL, Special Education, and Regular Education students.
All of these students have a variety of learning levels and abilities and as a result, I am always looking for new and innovative ways that allow my students to work at their personal level and pace.
Along with having a variety of learning levels, my students come from various parts of the world. Their life experiences play a huge part in our classroom environment and each student brings something different to the classroom community. We work hard daily to create a classroom community that is safe and allows students to take academic risks.
My Project
At our school, we celebrate US veterans and military service men by holding a Wreaths Across America Ceremony at our school. The misson of Wreaths Across America is to Remmeber our fallen US veterans, honor those who serve, and teach children the value of freedom.
Here, we would like to add a Hero Tree to our ceremony which would allow students and their families to honor family members who are currently serving or who have previously served in our military.
Students would be creating ornaments at home with their families to bring in and hang on the tree before the Wreaths Across America Ceremony this year. Since some students may not have the materials at home needed to create ornaments, I have also asked for some basic materials that students can come and get to bring home or create after school. I have asked for plastic shatterproof globes of different designs, markers, ribbon, glitter glue, and hot glue guns to create the ornaments. These materials would allow all students, no matter their finances, that would like to create an ornament to honor a family member able to do so.
The artificial tree and ornaments would be used every year in our ceremony. Each year as new students and families come into our school they will be able to add new decorations to our Hero Tree in order to honor all active military members and vertans.
