Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are first-time school learners who are extremely active, motivated, excited, and may I say, adorable! A majority of my students come to my class in August knowing little or no English. A majority of my students are Latino with three students who were born in Bangladesh. All of my students come from families whose income falls below the poverty line. Many of my children live with multiple families in small apartments where space is at a premium.
It has been an honor and a pleasure to have taught at my school since its inception.
The school offers free breakfast and lunch to all of our pre K to 5th-grade students and often these are the only meals they eat in a day. The students in my class are eager to learn through motivating higher level activities. Unfortunately, I have only an hour of teacher assistant time twice a week for my active and needy four-year-olds and keeping everyone on task and learning can often be a challenge.
The more stimulating, hands-on manipulatives and centers I can rotate in my classroom, the more time I can devote to each student's individual needs.
My Project
The children that I teach spend a majority of their hours after school holed up in small crowded apartment. Most of their parents are working 12 to 16 hours a day just to make ends meet. As a result, my students are rarely exposed to nature. They don't go to parks or beaches or hiking trails where they would normally enjoy and learn about animals, insects, birds, and amphibians. With the help of the Viewmasters, children will get a chance to see nature up close and personal. They will see planets and stars and animals right in front of their eyes. It is at least a glimpse of their world and perhaps it will give them the idea to ask their parents to take them outdoors to see some of the beauty in the world that we live in. It will also spark class discussions during science and literature time at school.
