Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach first grade in Richmond, CA. My students come to school eager to learn about the world. I am asking for some fantastic non-fiction books that will engage my first graders, build on their interests and motivate them to read. These books will be used in reading workshop, writing workshop and as resources for students' personal inquiries. Reading workshop is a method of reading instruction that builds on students personal interests and enables them to build their reading skills with books of their choice. These books would be available to children in our class library and during their reading workshop times. Additionally, reading and studying non-fiction books will provide my students with the needed schema to understand non-fiction in the upper grades. In writing workshop, students learn to write by studying real writers. These selected books provide students with excellent examples of non-fiction writing that is interesting and engaging. The authors of these books write in ways that makes non-fiction writing exciting. These books will be used as models for the students' own writing. Finally, these books are full of factual information about many topics that will interest my students. My students will be able to use these books as resources for their own inquiries into the world. These books would make a great addition to our library. We will use them to become better readers and writers. Most importantly, they will motivate and engage my students in exciting learning. Thank you for your generosity!
