My 27 students need a set of the second book in a gripping Hunger Games trilogy, "Catching Fire", which some have described as the most captivating story they have ever read!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Imagine a class of Below-Grade Level 7th graders, hanging on your every word, begging you not to put the book down, but to read, "Just one more chapter!" This has been my reward as I've read the first book in a gripping trilogy to my students. For many, it's their first time of loving reading!
Many of my below grade level students come from homes where reading is not prioritized - either because the parents have limited education (or limited English skills) and are not able to read well, or because it's just not important.
The students I teach are not severely below grade, just one or possibly two levels below, and thus they are "on the bubble." For years, I have seen it as my mission to help steer their direction towards success in life. An ability to read (and even a love of reading) is a key in their success journey! It has been gratifying, year after year, to see an apathy or even disdain turn into a love for reading, for learning, and for life, during the year.
My Project
The first book in the trilogy, The Hunger Games, has allowed us to discuss important concepts on two levels. Firstly, on an academic level, we've explored many California State Standards for 7th graders, including plot development, characterization, and theme. A rich understanding of these concepts, through engaging and high-interest literature will serve as a foundation for further academic development in subsequent grades. On a deeper level, some of the moral issues and dilemmas that the story raises have led to interesting discussions, and life applications that will serve the students in their social development and contributions.
Given the high-engaging factor of the storyline, the rich resource for teaching literary concepts, and the natural life questions raised by the book, I would like to continue to use the trilogy as a basis for much of my teaching/learning through this year and subsequent years.
There is no clearer affirmation of my choice of material than the students asking me every day whether we're going to read the Hunger Games today!
They can't get enough of it. As we're moving through the book and towards the end, dozens have asked me whether we can read the next one (Catching Fire) in the trilogy. I therefore respectfully and humbly ask you to support me in this project and allow them access to book #2. Thank you!
