Getting middle school students to love to read is half the battle in improving their reading skills. Throughout the school year I encourage students to experiment with reading a variety of genres. We read newspapers, cook with recipes, laugh through fiction, and cry with non-fiction. I watch struggling students come into my classroom, grab a novel, and excitedly read to find out what happens next. My students have even been known to run by my room after school and borrow a book on their way to the bus. Receiving a set of Eragon novels would provide another genre of books to my growing collection. Middle school students will be engulfed in the fantasy of a fifteen year old boy in a land of dragons and magic. Even more thrilling is the notion that the novel was written by a fifteen year old boy himself. My students would be proud to say that they have read a novel over 500 pages long! What an accomplishment for a student who didn't like to read!
