I teach Kindergarten in a suburb. We have many students bused from low income areas to our school. I have 19 students, some of which are mainstreamed from a special education class. I am requesting five different activities to increase children's literacy skills. They will be used primarily with the volunteers that come to help in my classroom. This includes retired people, parents and high school volunteers. I want to be sure my volunteers are doing effective, useful things with the children in the classroom. They are a vital part of student success. The activities that I am requesting focus on rhyming, beginning sounds, ending sounds and a question of the day activity. All of these are of high interest to five year olds and user friendly for the volunteers. Similar activities that I have used before really do elicit cries of "I can read"!!!
