The students need to be exposed to informational text as they are learning to read. They are coming out with more books geared to first grade beginning readers but my school does not have very many of these books. I am trying to build my classroom library with some of these kinds of books.
My children are first graders (6 year olds) and they attend school in Boca Raton, Florida.
It is a public school. The children do not have a lot of money and have parents that work long hours. It broke my heart last year when I had children that became so interested in reading and then they said they had NO books at home.
The resources that I am requesting are 3 different kinds of informational text. I think they need to learn more about their country , their community and the famous people from the past. These books present this information on the level that they can understand it. As of this year, first graders are expected to be able to read this kind of book and will be assessed on it. The problem with that is that there is no funding for it. The money would have to come out of my pocket. These children are the future of our country and we need to prepare them with all types of literature.
My project is important because there are so many books out there that are enjoyment types of books at the first grade reading level.
I have, after 1 year of teaching first grade been able to get together a small library of those kinds of books. Now I need to inspire them to have an interest in reading informational text.
