Many of our students are challenged with life hardships. At times this affects their performance in school. They need a lot of push to be motivated. The ordinary everyday art project does not reach them.
Our students must have a personal connection to their art pieces.
They come to us with a variety of nationalities, backgrounds, and levels of academics. They are all similar in their creative process. Students must have this internal connection in order to succeed with a piece.
My Project
A standard in the middle school art curriculum is using symbolism in a piece of art work. Students are replacing ideas with symbols and personal imagery. The artist Charles Demuth exemplifies the use of symbolism in his painting "I Saw the Figure 5 in Gold." We will be connecting the poem "The Great Figure" that Demuth used as inspiration.
There will also be an interdisciplinary connection by using a poem they created in English class.
Students will create a symbolic painting, learn about the artist through discovery bags, and finally display their pieces and poems at an art show celebrating their work.
