Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 7th-grade students are a myriad of different ethnic groups and most come from low-income families. I have several foster, homeless, and immigrant children in my classroom. My school provides them with amazing opportunities and ensures they receive a well-rounded education. However, many come from challenging situations that most of us can not even imagine.
Providing all my students with the best education and positive experiences are my goals as a teacher.
I love instilling them with my passion for learning, and I hope that they carry it with them throughout any tough times they have.
My Project
Finding out about the world we live in while not using the internet is a challenge for students today. So much of what they know and read is from websites, social media, or inaccurate news stories. Often the parts of history are distorted to fit a public perception. Finding engaging and accurate books about history is often challenging. The You Wouldn't Want to Be series is one that grabs students' attention and teaches them about history in a fun and hilarious way.
Nonfiction reading is the area that my students struggle in the most.
Often in middle school, non-fiction reading becomes boring and laborious due to the long passages of text.
The books in this grant have shorter passages with pictures and interesting facts to keep students engaged. These books make you laugh out loud and present history in a way that is perfect for a teenager.
