Welcome to chemistry! Today kids, we are going to analyze Wheaties. Yes, that's right, your cereal. Look on the back of this box, see, it has iron listed right there on the label, but is it the type of iron that your body can digest? Oh wait; we can't do this lab, because we don't have a magnetic stirrer. I would have gotten iron fillings to come right off of the cereal, but alas, we just don't have the equipment. I am a 9th grade Physiology and 11th grade Chemistry teacher in Oakland, California and I am writing to you to ask you for a magnetic stirrer. But let me introduce you to my school first. I work at a small school in Oakland, serving low income African-American and Latino students. This work is the most exciting, difficult and wonderful experience. I wish you could be present to see the amazing transformations that I have the privilege to witness on a day to day basis. It is truly awe inspiring. There are, however, some funding issues.
One of the things that would benefit our classroom, and this includes both me and my teaching partner, is a magnetic stirrer. We will pay for the magnetic bars used on the stirrer, but we need your help purchasing this essential piece of equipment that most science labs have. All of our students would benefit from this experience, as this lab can be taught to all of our students, in Chemistry, Biology, and Physiology. Your generosity would touch over 300 student's lives, and in the process get them excited about working in the sciences. Students often wonder how science is any use to them, as they don't see the implications to the “real world.” With your gift, however, and the applications that we would use it for, illustrates to them the need to apply chemistry to life, and ultimately how to be good chemistry consumers.
