Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My second grade students and I live in a beautiful Southern California coastal city where an increasing number of families within our district are falling into the lower economic levels. Many families find it more and more challenging to spend quality time with their children after demanding work schedules. Despite the hardships and stress, the children arrive at school with a positive attitude and a thirst for new knowledge.
Their eager, smiling faces encourage me every day to give them experiences and opportunities that will last their lifetime.
We encourage each other to be the best we can be by learning cooperation, integrity, respect, responsibility, and independence.
My Project
Kids love to be involved in discussing the world around them. My second grade students are very much aware of many of the issues that happen in the world today. We regularly discuss social, economic, and environmental events and Scholastic News provides up-to-date news articles presented in a newspaper-type fashion. Most second grade students will tell you that Science is one of their favorite classroom subjects. Scholastic Science Spin magazines will give my students more opportunities to explore high interest grade level science topics.
Empowering students with current event and science awareness, broadens their knowledge, and deepens their connection with the world.
Scholastic News and Science Spin keep students engaged using a variety of text features. Full-color photographs, maps, diagrams, and grade-level text allow for successful independent or partner reading. Online or pencil and paper comprehension quizzes give me valuable information on my students' performance and progress. Easy to follow science experiments are always engaging and vital in expanding my students’ experiences.
