My Students

I want my reluctant readers to get motivated and envision a future that includes higher education and a fulfilling career. On my campus, we have a poverty rate of approximately 98%, and as studies show, poverty troubles even the best readers, and "one in six children who are not reading proficiently in third grade do not graduate from high school on time, a rate four times greater than that for proficient readers".

My students should have the opportunity to escape with a book!

My Project

I am striving to create a print-rich classroom that focuses on my students' needs. My students enjoy their independent reading time, but I know they would enjoy having more variety on their own levels. I have seen my students choose books which were not on their level because they enjoy the topic.

My students need high interest books on their levels, so they do not get to the level of frustration and will enjoy and understand the LOVE of reading.

My focus is to increase their reading abilities by having my students read more books on their levels. The more books they read, the more growth they will experience.
