Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
“If we teach today as we taught yesterday, we rob our children of tomorrow.” ~ John Dewey.
Today, teaching is interactive, differentiated, technology based and rigorous. IPads allow students to work at their own pace and gain independence so they can actively engage in classroom activities.
My students are energetic and fun inner-city high school students.
My students have a range of disabilities including learning disabilities, visual impairments, autism and intellectual disabilities. Many of them are also English Language Learners. My students show greater enthusiasm when learning is interactive, interesting and includes technology.
My school is located in a large urban city. Of the 3,100 students 94% are low-income, 10% of the students have disabilities, and 8% are English Language Learners. More than 75% of my particular students are low-income, have disabilities and are English Language Learners. I teach my students not to let their personal home situations, English Language Learners status or disabilities hinder their academic or social emotional growth.
My Project
All students have the right to access instructional materials; for my students who have disabilities and/or are English Language Learners, it is difficult. Deficits in reading or writing may limit access to text and written responses even though they understand the material they hear and have great ideas to share. I am asking for one iPad Air 2 and one iPad mini 2. These iPads will allow my students to access all educational material for learning, practice and responding. Using the iPads in every day instruction allows students to be engaged. Simple access such as enlarging text or listening to a passage provides opportunities to participate in interactive discussions/activities with peers. Speech-to-text applications allow students who have difficulty writing to share their thoughts without being limited by spelling or sentence structure. Voice memo applications allow students to participate by responding when they are ready, alleviating them from feeling pressure and shutting down. IPads create the equal learning environment students deserve.
This project will provide my students with access.
The applications in the iPads allow students full access to learning activities at any time. Students are more confident, more motivated and actively participate in educational activities as iPads provide the opportunity to engage in their learning INDEPENDENTLY. They can then utilize the skills learned on the iPads and transfer them by using their own technology to access instructional materials and response modes in other classes.
